Camille, a fourteen-year-old witch, watches as her mother is burned at the stake. She flees, chased by Xavier, a member of The Society. When Camille finds the auch, Aiyu, he takes her into the mountains for protection. Xavier follows and finds the entrance to the high country. The Society plan to have King Leopold attack and destroy the auchs, but Leopold misreads the information. Leopold marches south to intercept an invasion from Greche. With Leopold out of the city The Society hatches an alternate plan.

Steve Reilly lives on the NSW Central Coast and enjoys reading, writing, fishing and spending time with family. A career in engineering and project management provided opportunity for technical writing and he also wrote articles and humorous stories for the football club newsletter. But fantasy fired his imagination - new worlds, strange physical laws and the hero's journey. With the support of wife, Margot, he completed a creative writing course, retired and began the story of The Society.
